Trees live underground and use the above-ground part as a snorkel.

I usually think of trees as above-ground things that send a straw (roots) underground to drink, but it's just as correct to think of them as underground things that are using a snorkel to breath (as well as photosynthesize).

I am aware this oversimplifies the functions of the parts of a tree :)
